MS Dhoni is the leader of the pack. He can do nothing wrong. He had a great run with the Chennai Super Kings. In 2008, CSK lost in the final when Sohail Tanvir hit L. Balaji in the last ball to sneak a single and Rajasthan Royals upset the Kings party. In 2009 they lost in the semifinals to Royal Challengers Bangalore. In 2010 Dhoni's team beat Mumbai Indians in the final to lift the IPL 2010. To add the icing on the cake Dhoni's team also won the Champions League by beating the Warriors by 8 wickets. Can Dhoni continue with his Midas touch?
Sachin Tendulkar will look to go one step further this time after leading Mumbai Indians to the final in 2010. He was the leading run scorer of the tournament with 618 runs at an average of 47 and an amazing strike rate of 132. Mumbai Indians have retained Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard. With more firepower in the form of Rohit Sharma and Andrew Symonds – things are looking up for Sachin's team.
Daniel Vettori will be looking to continue the good work done by Anil Kumble for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Anil Kumble led from the front and RCB reached the finals in 2009 and the semifinals in 2010. Daniel Vettori will be confident after guiding New Zealand to the semifinals of the World Cup and will try to forget the dismal tours of Bangladesh and India last year. Vettori will have the young guns in Dilshan, AB de Villiers, Saurabh Tiwary and Virat Kohli to ensure that RCB do well in IPL 2011.
Gautam Gambhir will be filling in the big shoes of Sourav Ganguly for the Kolkata Knight Riders. An aggressive opening batsman Gambhir will be looking to carry his great captaincy record against New Zealand last year into this year's IPL. Gambhir was the leading run scorer that series averaging 109 and India was unbeaten in the series. At the IPL last season Gautam was a bit unlucky as Daredevils missed out on the semifinals spot by a whisker due to net run rate. This time around Gautam will leave nothing to chance as they have match winners like Yusuf Pathan, Eoin Morgan, Jacques Kallis and Shakib Al Hasan.
Kumar Sangakkara led Sri Lanka to the finals of the World Cup and if he can do the same with the Deccan Chargers, they won’t be complaining. The Chargers had another brilliant wicket keeper, Adam Gilchrist as captain. It will be a challenging set of gloves to fit in for Sanga. He will be hoping that the likes of JP Duminy, Kevin Pietersen, Cameron White and Dale Steyn erase his painful memories with the King's XI Punjab.
Mahela Jayawardene will be back in captain's role with the brand new team Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Mahela has been in great form during the World Cup as seen during the final. Geoff Lawson is the coach and Mahela will be looking to Brendon McCullum, Brad Hodge, Owais Shah, VVS Laxman and Muralitharan to ensure the Tuskers throw their weight around.
Yuvraj Singh is the man of the moment. The star of the World Cup and the man of the tournament will be looking to display leadership with another new team – Pune Warriors.
Yuvraj did not have a happy experience leading the Kings XI Punjab and with a new coach in Geoff Marsh and a team that has former RCB powerhouses in Robin Uthappa, Jesse Ryder and Manish Pandey. Yuvraj will be looking to seize the moment.
Shane Warne who led the Rajasthan Royals to a fairytale finish in the first season will be keen to write another chapter in the folklore of Shane Warne. The Royals have lost some of their key players in the auction like Yusuf Pathan but they have Ross Taylor, Rahul Dravid, Shane Watson and Shaun Tait. Can Shane spin another dream yarn in 2011?
Virender Sehwag has been the reluctant captain of late but when Delhi Daredevils needed a leader they did not have to look beyond Sehwag. A natural leader and a great cricketing brain Sehwag will lead from the front. With David Warner, Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel in the mix of things Delhi will look for the elusive silverware.
Adam Gilchrist transformed the Deccan Chargers from a team of whipping boys to winners in 2009. Adam will look to do the same with the Kings XI Punjab. The Kings were the whipping boys of last year's IPL and if they can repeat the Deccan Chargers story Gilchrist would have write the lines. Shaun Marsh, Dinesh Karthik, David Hussey will be looking to give the veteran gloveman company.
Which captain will lift the trophy in 2011? Which captain can lead from the front and hold his nerves this edition will be the question on everybody's mind?
