Yoga guru's followers from state stranded in Capital

Over 360 followers of Baba Ramdev from Assam are stranded in New Delhi after the yoga guru's satyagraha against corruption came to an abrupt end following the police crackdown on Ramlila maidan.

Dipak Pathak and Geeta Das members of the Patanjali Yoga Samity and the Bgarat Swabhiman Trust's Assam unit respectively suffered injuries in their legs when Delhi police lathicharged on them, along with other followers of Ramdev. While Pathak is a resident of Amingaon, Geeta is from Hojai. A group of about 365 followers of Ramdev had gone to the national capital to show solidarity with Ramdev's cause. Most of them are at present without a shelter and are trying to get in touch with each other.

"Along with their companions, Pathak and Geeta were on fast since Saturday morning, But police beat them up mercilessly. Most of the people from the state spent the night on railway stations and at Jantar Mantar among other places," Promod Chaudhury, vice-president of the Assam unit of Ramdev's Patanjali Yoga Samity and Bharat Swabhiman Trust, said on Sunday.

"They have their return tickets booked for next week, Till then, they do not know where to go. They have lost their belongings in the mayhem. Some women have fallen ill because of Delhi's scorching heat," he added.

The leaders of the state unit of both the organizations said they would continue with the agitation unless the Patanjali Trust's head office in Hardwar ordered them the next course of action. Ramdev's followers are staging a satyagraha in Guwahati and 15 other districts of Assam.

In the meantime, Shaka-racharya Swami Sri Adhyokshajanand, who was in the city on Sunday, said, "Ramdev is a fraud and backed by the RSS. He has used religion for his own business. He should now stop talking about religion."

The police action on Ramdev has, however, irked the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthee Parishad, activists of which staged dharnas here in protest against the Centre's "decision to apply force on the yoga guru's supporters".
