What
you see here are the first official images of the 2012 Hyundai i20
refresh / facelift which will be unveiled in flesh at the 2012 Geneva
Motor Show next week. As you would expect, the new i20 gets redesigned
headlamps which appear slimmer than the original, new bumpers with the
prominent hexagonal grille, redesigned fog-lamps, new alloy wheel
designs, new taillights and new rear bumpers. The hood has undergone a
major makeover too and loses the F1-style ‘nose’ that the original i20
had.
Expect the new Hyundai i20 facelift to be launched in India by Q2 2012. Stay tuned for more!
If you have been tuning into IndianAutosBlog.com this year, Hyundai testing the i20 facelift in Europe is not breaking news for you. Recently our photoshop expert Shoeb R Kalania prepared a very accurate illustration of the model that was snagged when it was unloaded from a container. The makeover is to align it with other models in the Hyundai showroom that flaunt the recent edition of the distinct ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language.
Hyundai is also taking stock of developments and breakthroughs in rival camps. Maruti rolled out the all-new Swift earlier this year to a grand ovation. There are whispers of Volkswagen working on an upgrade for Polo diesel. Fiat is topping-up equipment on the Punto on 3rd of January. Meanwhile the low-price Chevrolet’s Sail is being tested by GM near Talegaon for a 2012 launch.
Next year cars like the Ford EcoSport and Mahindra mini Xylo will be competition in new forms and sizes turning on the heat. With so many launches, the situation can change very fast for the quick-selling i20.
IAB reader Sharav Venkatesh from Chennai sent us an image of a speeding i20 facelift mule, partly camouflage from Sriperumbudur where Hyundai’s manufacturing facility is located. The wheel caps are the ones we saw on the European mule.
Under the hood we don’t expect anything drastic to change. The current powertrains will play out until a next generation diesel engine is ready.
Recently Hyundai discontinued the 6-speed transmission it shared with the Verna to give the Fludic Verna a clearer distinction.
The i20 has been well received in India. Customers appreciate its cabin space and comfort, interior quality, fuel efficiency and enormous luggage space. Having said that, the extended turbo lag, choppy ride quality and vague steering feedback are complaints Hyundai should address on the facelift.
So can we expect a facelifted i20 soon? As per some sources the i20is expecting some changes considering there has been no major change since the car was launched.
We expect the facelifted i20 to get the family look and will be based largely on the Fludic design concept. The prices will be hiked in the range of 15000-25000 depending on the version.
The engines will remain untouched with the same 1.2L, 1.4L petrol and 1.4L diesel continuing in the facelift version. We could expect the 1.6 manual to be featured in the new i20. More features like heated OVRMs, Bluetooth connectivity for the audio, keyless entry, push start stop button could make it in the high end versions.
Hyundai will launch the 5 door Accent in US which is the same as the new Verna minus the boot. The i20 and the Verna are based on the same platform.
Korean automaker Hyundai has recently given a fresh look to almost all its models. The highest selling Hyundai i10 from Hyundai’s stable got new refreshing look and stunning new Hyundai Verna Fluidic is also one of the latest facelifts from the company. However one car was overlooked, Hyundai i20 went on sale in December 2008 and since then got no real facelift.
In past sometime, Hyundai i20 has been doing good sales for Hyundai India in premium hatchback segment and it has not been face-lifted for a long time now. The facelift introduces last year in 2010 was a significant but not major one.
Our friends at Motorbeam reported that 2012 Hyundai i20 is likely to launch by this Diwali festive season, which is around October 2011. New Hyundai i20 will feature a new Hyundai grille design and fluidic headlights along with revised tail lights and new alloy wheels. The interiors will also get slight revision to get it in line with latest standards.
It is expected to cost slightly high of peaking Rs. 20,000/- when the new i20 goes on sale in October, 2011. The engines will remain untouched with the same 1.2L, 1.4L petrol and 1.4L diesel continuing in the facelift version.
(Note – The actual car may differ from the above model shown. This image is of 2012 Kia Rio based on the same platform as the Hyundai i20)

It
was long overdue. The Hyundai i20 - which was one the first models from
the Korean carmaker to give a foretaste of fluidic lines that make the
current Hyundai car so stunning to look at – was begging to get a
makeover with generous dose of the Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy.
And Hyundai has granted it the wish.

the Indian Auto Industry and was a sole competitor to the Swift and

USA-
Accent Planet's Rendition of the Hyundai i20 facelift. This is what we
mean about Hyundai being "Too Conservative for it's own good." The
Hyundai i20 design facelift or not facelift is very long in the tooth
already, and a replacement seems desperately needed. The design looked
nice in 2008, but it's 2011 and it already looks like a 6-7 year old
car.
Say what you want to say about last Gen Accent MC hatch, but people still ask when they see Hyundai Smoke's pimped out Accent MC "Can we still buy one?" We don't think they would say that about the Hyundai i20 with it's bland and conservative body panels, and awkward Euro style D Pillar.

The mood at IndianCarsBikes.in HQ is
pretty electric with the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo just a few weeks away.
Your portal to the automotive world will be flooded with news from the
Auto Expo come January 4th. We will covering each and every event
happening during the exposition. We’ve already talked about some of the
upcoming launches that have been lined-up for the expo. That said, we
might have a surprise in store for us at the Hyundai stands.
Our friends at IndianAutosBlog have
caught the facelifted Hyundai i20 hatchback doing its usual test rounds.
The new car’s exterior gets a bit of the new fluidic treatment which
has become the standard for all Hyundai vehicles in recent times. Thanks
to Vikram Viswanathan who managed to grab a couple clicks of the new
Hyundai i20. Not much seems to have changed on the side of the car
though. Having said that, the front and the rear are under some heavy
cladding.
We had brought you spy shots of the i20
facelift caught in Europe, if you remember. This though, seems to be
different. For instance, the tail lamp cluster on the the latest pics
are sculpted with what looks like three light pods. Meanwhile, up front
the head lamps have their distinct fluidic design pods. Also, we can
expect a new front bumper and grille. Now, the current fluidic cars from
Hyundai have this unique trapezoidal grin on their face which will be
carried over to the i20 as well.
Even though, Hyundai hasn’t made formal
announcement of the launch of the new i20 during the Auto Expo, we do
expect the new hatchback to make its debut during the show. Also,
engines and other technical details are expected to remain the same.
