Scooter cops hit headwinds on fundraiser

TWO days into their mission to scoot to Christchurch and Gisborne police constables Nathan Whitley and Rob Newman have “never been so knackered”.

The pair arrived in Napier last night after 11 hours on the road on their kick-along scooters.

Today they are pushing on to Dannevirke through “nasty head winds” on their way to raise $10,000 and deliver it to quake-stricken Christchurch.

“The first day wasn’t too bad.

“We got to Nuhaka OK but from there to Wairoa was awful. What should have taken us two and a half hours took four,” said Mr Whitley.

“Yesterday was the same. No matter which way we turned, we would always hit a head wind.

“Our muscles aren’t too bad. They were a little bit stiff last night but nothing a good sleep can’t fix.”

The hardest part was Devil’s Elbow between Napier and Wairoa, he said.

“It seemed to never end. We had to walk the whole way. There was no way we could scoot up that.

“It was fun going down the other side though — we got up to 79.5kmh.”

Despite the high speed, the men have had only one spill. Mr Newman got his feet tangled as he changing “pushing legs” and went over his handle bars.

“Like any good man, he dusted himself off and continued on his way,” said Mr Whitley.

“We’re still quite excited about it. We’re already two days down, so that’s eight to go and hopefully from now on it will get a little bit easier.

“It has already been a great experience. It is a lot of hard work but a lot of fun. We have had great support — people toot and cheer us on, while others pull over to donate. We have collected $500 on the road so far.”

• Gisborne people who wish to donate can do so at KiwiBank, Kathmandu, Gisborne police station, Specsavers or Avanti Plus.
