Beetham hospital facility under way

CONSTRUCTION of the Beetham Lifestyle Village aged-care hospital complex has started.

The multimillion-dollar complex is expected to be open at the beginning of September.

The design includes serviced apartments and will cater for hospital, dementia, palliative resthome and assisted-care living.

The first stage of the facility will provide 42 hospital suites and 12 serviced apartments. It will be the only facility in Gisborne to provide hydrotherapy. Other services will include physiotherapy and diversional therapy.

Beetham Village is home to about 80 residents. High demand for new villas has prompted the early opening of the stage 4 residency development.

The healthcare facility will be built in two stages. The first part will cost $7 million but with the addition of more wings, construction will total $11 million.

More than 20 people are working on the hospital. That number will increase once the subcontractors are on-site.

On completion, the facility will require about 60 full and part- time employees.

“The part-time arrangements will be ideal for those who don’t wish to work full days or shifts, such as mothers of schoolchildren,” says sales manager Robin McGrievy .

With a multi-purpose facility on site, the village will be able to offer residents the security of accommodation and continuous care from home to hospital for the rest of their lives.

“It’s a peace of mind thing,” says Mr McGrievy.

“We’re short of geriatric hospital care in Gisborne because it’s often long-term. It takes a lot of room — and it’s costly. If something happens, the healthcare service is right here.

“The complex will have plenty of glass and views of surroundings,” says Mr McGrievy.

Beetham Village board chairman Colin Christie and director Marcus Williams take particular pride in the fact that the facility is locally-owned and run. Beetham uses only local contractors.
