PUDUCHERRY: Polling to 30 assembly segments in the Union territory of Puducherry began on a brisk note and ended in a peaceful manner, barring a few stray incidents on April 13.
The union territory registered an impressive voters' turnout of 83.59% with its enclave Yanam in Andhra Pradesh recording 95.46%. Puducherry and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu registered 83.72% and 81.85% respectively, while Mahe in Kerala had a (75.98%) turnout. The figures are likely to go up after the final tally.
A large number of voters, including women queued up before 8am at most of the booths in both urban and rural assembly segments to exercise their franchise.
Though there were not many untoward incidents, tension prevailed for a while at Uppalam constituency when a BSP booth agent protested against the presence of an AIADMK party cadre inside the booth. Heavy posse of policemen and para-military forces were posted at Kalapet constituency from where public works minister MOHF Shahjagan sought re-election. Security personnel were deployed following complaints that the Congress cadres were canvassing votes for the minister on Wednesday morning.
Two anganwadi workers posted on poll duty at Keezh Sathamangalam in Mangalam constituency were sent out from the booth after officials found that they had asked people to vote in favour of Congress splinter group, All-India NR Congress. In the same booth, agents of independent candidates complained that Congress cadres were distributing money to voters near the polling station.
Puducherry, where 187 candidates were in the fray, has nearly 8.11 lakh voters, including 4,19,890 women and five others. Prominent contestants include chief minister V Vaithilingam and his five cabinet colleagues, former chief ministers RV Janakiraman (DMK) and N Rangasamy, who quit Congress and floated the All-India NR Congress.
The main battle is between the ruling Congress-led alliance, which includes DMK, PMK and VCK and NR-Congress that forged an alliance with AIADMK, CPI and DMDK.
Out of the 30 assembly segments, Congress contested 17 seats, DMK 10, PMK two and VCK one. From the opposition front, NR-Congress fought from 17 seats, AIADMK 11, CPI and DMDK one each.
CPI(M), which is a part of the AIADMK-led alliance in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu, contested independently from Mahe in Kerala and Lawspet in Puducherry.
