New Zealand has a problem.
A drinking problem.
It's been a problem for years and unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's going to let up soon.
Mid Canterbury is no different.
Sad but true.
So what is it?
Do we hate our existence so much we have to erase memories of our lives?
Do we simply have nothing better to do?
Do we simply enjoy it as a social outlet or do we use it as an excuse to do stupid things and have something to blame it on?
Who knows.
I'm not saying I haven't indulged in binge-drinking before but sometimes asking those questions makes us think, what was the point?
Many people my age head out of the district at weekends, choosing to spend their time and money in cities.
Others prefer to stay at home and drink.
And unfortunately, there are the ones who like to drink and cause trouble.
Whether it's an all-too-common fight in a pub or fisticuffs in lines for food, alcohol just adds fuel to the fire.
So does drinking take otherwise normal people and turn them into animals, some could say a completely different person?
In some cases yes.
Is it a good thing?
No.
People make mistakes, no one is perfect.
But how many mistakes does it make before you have a problem?
How many mistakes does it take for something serious to happen, for someone to get seriously hurt or killed?
It could be you, it could be a friend or worse, it could be someone completely innocent.
Makes you think just a little bit doesn't it?
So while some may criticise police for targeting alcohol related issues, I say hats off to them.
These people see a problem and are doing the best they can to help it.
After all, they're the ones who have to deal with the consequences more often than not.
So maybe next time, just think, is the hangover worth it?
