Rate of new HIV infections down by 50%

The rate of new HIV infections fell by more than 50 per cent in India between 2001 and 2009, double the average decline in the world, according to a report released by UNAIDS on Saturday.
“In India, the rate of new HIV infections fell by more than 50 per cent and in South Africa by more than 35 per cent; both countries have the largest number of people living with HIV on their continents,” according to the study entitled ‘AIDS at 30: Nations at the Crossroads'.
The report said the global rate of new infections declined by nearly 25 per cent between 2001 and 2009.
