The quality of our lives

WELLINGTON has again been voted among the top cities in the country with residents saying they feel safe in the city and are satisfied with their quality of life.
The results of the latest Quality of Life survey were released this week. The survey measures the perceptions of over 6,000 residents living in eight of the country’s largest cities.
Over 89 percent of Wellingtonians said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their lives, with 36 percent saying their quality of life had improved over the past 12 months.  Ninety-seven percent said they felt safe in their home after dark with 75 percent feeling safe in the central business district after dark.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown was particularly pleased with the results in the area of personal safety.
“The council has been working hard with the police and the hospitality sector, the universities and other interest groups in recent years to enhance safety,” Wade-Brown says. “This is a top priority and it will continue.”
Mayor Wade-Brown says the survey showed Wellingtionians continue to be the country’s most regular users of public transport with 37 percent being frequent public transport users while 86 percent believed the city’s public transport was safe.
“It confirms my view that we have to invest in public transport and make it a top priority. The council will propose more bus priority lanes and build more shelters.”
Mayor Wade-Brown says she is urging Greater Wellington Regional Council, the bus companies and the government to keep public transport fares affordable.
