Fatally stabbed ... cops have launched a murder probe over the attack
He was stabbed in the back after a confrontation with around five men and women in Cleckheaton, near Dewsbury, West Yorks, around 12.50am.
The man was taken to Dewsbury District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "It is believed that an altercation had taken place at a house party on Brooklyn Road and the victim, who was at another address further down the street, had been asked for help.
"The man was then approached in the street by a group of men and women and a further altercation took place during which he received fatal injuries."
A post-mortem is yet to take place.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Bottomley of the Force's Homicide and Major Inquiry Team, said: "This was a vicious attack which resulted in a man losing his life.
"At this stage of the investigation we believe that following some disorder at a house party, the victim had been on his way to help.
"As a result, he was set upon by what we believe to be a group of five men and women and subsequently received stab wounds to his back.
"There were a lot of people in the street at the time of this attack and I urge them or anyone else who can assist us with this inquiry to contact police."
A 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Elsewhere the same force arrested a 32-year-old on suspicion of murdering a 75-year-old who died after being assaulted last night in Fartown, Huddersfield, around 8.30pm.
A MAN was stabbed to death today after being asked to break up a fight at a party.
