Day 2: Monnet Men's Boxing Championship offers enthralling action

NEW DELHI: Day 2 of the quarter-final bouts in the Federation Cup Men's Boxing Championship presented by the Monnet Ispat & Energy Limited continued to offer boxing aficionados in Goa an awe-inspiring display of boxing talent. The four day event, being held at the Calangute Association Ground from 12th to the 15th May, 2011 is being organized by the Goa Amateur Boxing Association under the aegis of the Indian Boxing Federation. The Championship brings out the best state and board teams from the domestic arena and also makes for a perfect breeding ground for emerging boxers providing them an opportunity to showcase their talent.

The top teams from the National Champions are invited to partake in the contest along with the host team. In the previous edition of the tournament SSCB bagged top honours with 6 gold medals and two silver. RSPB stood second with one gold medal, five silver and two bronze. Haryana claimed the third spot with two gold and 4 bronze medals. This edition of the Monnet Federation Cup will witness a participation of over 75 boxers representing 8 teams, including Services, All India Police, Chandigarh, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and hosts Goa. A fascinating tradition in itself, the tournament finds strong backing in the form of Monnet Group, which has providing constant support to the IABF and the amateur boxers of the country.

The first fight of the day in the light fly weight category and Abhishek of Uttar Pradesh took on Goa's MalikSab Chapparband. Goa's rising "Youth" Boxer Maliksab could not match the speed and consistency of Abhishek that was on display. In the end the boxer from Uttar Pradesh went on to win with a huge margin of 8:2 on points to make his place in the semi-final of the tournament.

In the second bout of the day, also in the light fly weight division, Pawan Singh from Delhi tried his level best to match up to L Devendro Singh of the Services team. But the strength and agility and of the defending champion was too much for the Delhi boxer. Devendro, who led 4-nil after the first round, sent Pawan Singh for a count in the first minute of the second. Pawan tried his level best to catch up in the third round, and although he manage to open his account, but was not good enough to match the metal of Devendro. The services boxer went on to secure his place in the semi-final with a score 9:2.

Playing in the flyweight division, SS Shrinivas of the Services locked horns with Devendra of Haryana for a place in the semi-finals. Shriniwas a bronze medallist of the 2010 Youth Asian Championship completely outclassed his Haryana opponent to win with a score of 11:6

Sandeep Singh of All Indian Police and Amit Kumar Uttrakhand notched up similar victories in the bantam weight class, with an identical score of 6:2 against Sandeep Malik of Delhi and Rahul Sharma AIP

In the light welter weight division, Mitlesh of Goa was up against Akash Rana of Delhi. In what was a close encounter the Goan boxer trounced his Delhi opponent in the end. In the first round Mitlesh lead 4:2 and maintaining his four punch combination, extended his lead to 8:5 in the second round and finally won his bout 11:9 to advance to last four of the tournament.
