‘Killer’ Hubby Gets 25 Years

A FARMER at Asukese, near Mim, in the Brong Ahafo region, Kwadwo Addai, who tried to kill his wife by butchering her last week, has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment by the Goaso Circuit Court.

The Circuit Court Judge, Osei Kwame, sentenced Kwadwo Addai on two counts of attempting suicide and causing unlawful harm.

Presenting the facts of the case, the prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Frimpong, said Kwadwo Addai had suspected his wife, whom he has three children with, of having extra marital affairs for some time.

He said on April 23, 2011, he tried to end the marriage by ending his life by attempting to drink a poisonous substance, but in the process of doing that, the wife saw him and intervened. Victoria later reported the matter to the Mim police.

Inspector Frimpong said when the police tried to deploy personnel to effect the husband’s arrest, the wife told the police that the husband had gone to the farm so she would call them when he returned.

But she didn’t call until the next day when she went to the police station to report again that the husband had shot a catapult at her breast.

Inspector Frimpong stated that on the third day, when the lady was on the footpath from their village to see her dad at the next village with her baby, the husband, who was by then hiding in the bush, pounced on her and started slashing her with the machete, so the woman threw her baby into the bush.

According to him, the lady shouted for help, which attracted some farmers in the nearby bush to rescue her. He said by then, the husband had absconded after inflicting ghastly machete wounds on his wife.

The farmers took her to the hospital, not knowing that her baby was in the bush.

It was during the inhabitants of Asukese’s search for the man the next day that they found the baby sleeping alone in the bush with the mum’s cut fingers.

The prosecutor stated that on April 27, 2011, inhabitants of Asukese, in their search, found the husband trying to commit suicide with a machete by slashing his throat.

He said the residents arrested him and handed him over to the police, where he was given a police medical report to receive medical treatment under police guard.

Kwadwo Addai, who pleaded guilty to the crime but put the blame on the devil, was later sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment.
