ASEAN (Association of South east Nation) is an organization of cluster nations in Southeast Asia that aims to build cooperation in the economy, social and culture among its members. The ASEAN summit is held every year to strengthen the cooperation among its members.
This year the ASEAN summit is held in Jakarta and Indonesia is appointed to be the chairman for the next five years. ASEAN summit was opened by Indonesian President Yudhoyono in Jakarta, Saturday 7 May 2011 and attended by leaders from 10 countries. The Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Laos Thongsing Thammavong, Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato 'Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Myanmar Thein Sein, Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and Senior Minister S Jayakumar representing Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong attend the Jakarta ASEAN summit 2011.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked the ASEAN leaders to respond to the dynamics of conflict that can affect the sustainable peace in the region. The President said ASEAN should be able to facilitate diplomatic and open dialogue forum to solve the conflicts among its members.
"All the efforts to manage conflict we have outlined in the Blueprint of the ASEAN Security Community Politics. Our obligation is to implement the joint agreement, "said President SBY in his speech when he was opening The 18 ASEAN summit in Jakarta Convention Center last Saturday.
