Farmers' skills reap rewards

Taranaki farmers have featured well at the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards in Queenstown.
More than 600 representatives attended the awards on Saturday when more than $130,000 in cash and prizes were awarded.
South Taranaki farmers Charlie and Johanna McCaig won $8300 as runner-up in the New Zealand farm manager-of-the-year award. First place went to Jason Halford of Manawatu.
Up-and-coming talent Samuel Humphreys was awarded $3600 for placing third in the New Zealand trainee-of-the-year division.
Taranaki farmers Kate and Aaron Murdoch gained merit for the DairyNZ interview award while former Hawera farmer Scott Levings won the DairyNZ human resource award.
Waikato duo Jason and Lisa Suisted were the big winners on the evening, receiving $40,000 in prizes in the sharemilker and equity farmer-of-the-year category.
Judge Jo Bishell said the Suisteds, who run a 50 per cent 430-head sharemilking business near Hamilton, demonstrated standout financial performance and pasture management.
Mr Halford manages a 154ha sharemilking property with 440 cows near Palmerston North.
