Damp start for duathlon hopefuls

It was a wet start to the Duathlon Series yesterday but by the end of race one the 102 entrants crossed the finish line in sunshine.
DuathlonCRWith the wet weather for the first lap of the run the field soon spread out and it was young Greg Moore from Christchurch showing all the older athletes what duathlon was all about.
Moore took the lead from the start of the event and dominated not only the run, but the bike as well and finished comfortably first by over six minutes from local Michael Gallagher in second, with a further four seconds back to Paul Crossley.
In the women's race Leanne Fifield took out first place from Shirley Roulston showing age is no barrier and Michelle Hathaway came in third.
The team races were fought out closely with the team of Jake Bell and Daniel Rafferty holding out Richard Kirwan and Alistair Holmes, with Kevin Opele and Hayden Robertson finishing third.
In the women's team race Denise Taylor and Charlotte Cox finished first while in the family section Lynda and the evergreen Donald Summerfield were too strong for the other five family teams.
In the short course Nathan Schmann from Christchurch did the same as Moore had in the long course leading from start to finish, although Steve Caldwell tried his best to bridge the gap. Third individual male was Ross Proctor showing good form but he had to take second place to wife Shona McGrath-Proctor, who was nine seconds quicker being the first female home. Kristine Marriott was second 12 seconds back and third Sheree Bowles.
In the teams Sam Cullimore and Hayley Gimblett were too strong for Bailey Kershaw and Kees Donaldson with Bailey Donaldson and Matthew Clough. In the family section Ian and Amy Cullimore were first - too strong for the other 11 family teams.
