Beledene heifer fetches $4000 at sale

Buyers from throughout New Zealand attended Beledene Jerseys' 40th annual sale near Kaponga last week.
Greg and Catherine Campbell, of Kaponga, paid the top price of $4000 for six-year-old Beledene Links Luella, and several in-calf heifers fetched more than $3000.
Maiden three-year- old heifer Beledene Star Sunray made $3700. Beledene Imps Imelda, Beledene Lees Latona, Beledene Top Invite and Beledene Dels Innocent all realised $3100, while the top-priced bull, Beledene Less Intrepid, fetched $2600.
The average price for the seven pedigree cows offered at the sale was $2025, and the average for the 25 in-calf heifers was $2056. Six yearling heifers averaged $960, and 17 yearling bulls $1187.
RD1 auctioneer Andrew Gibson said the Beledene cattle were always presented well by stud owners, the Revell family, of Mangatoki.
The sale attracted a huge following and ran smoothly, because the family had many volunteers to assist.
The prices were about what Mr Gibson expected.
"More than 40 years of breeding and genetics helped push the values to where they needed to be and what they deserved," he said.
The top price at Dick Johnson's Hasty River jersey stud sale at Mangatoki last week was $2000 for heifer Hasty River Ace Dimple.
Neighbours Ross and Sue Johnson paid $1700 for heifer Hasty River Lyn Rarseal.
Thirty-four in-calf heifers at the sale averaged $1332, and the average price for two yearling bulls was $850.
