Vadodara/Thane, Apr 23(ANI): Renowned classical singer Pandit Jasraj on Saturday supported the demand to confer 'Bharat Ratna' to batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar in view of his outstanding contribution to the game of cricket.
On the sidelines of an event, Jasraj also presented a few musical notes in Tendulkar's honour. Tendulkar would turn 38 on Sunday.
"Why should he not get Bharat Ratna? The man who has brought such a good name to our country, made the sport of cricket so famous. Any one who excels in that particular field gets the award. He should get it," Pandit Jasraj said.
Meanwhile, the civic body of Thane hailed Tendulkar's birthday by naming a new stadium after star batsman.
The Mayor of Thane city said the ground would be used for outdoor games like cricket and football and termed the setting up of this sports arena as a major landmark in the history of the city.
"The mini stadium that is being constructed, it was proposed that its name could be Sachin Tendulkar Krida Sankul (Sachin Tendulkar Games Grounds). The board unanimously approved the name. We feel that though it is only a mini stadium it is still a big achievement for people of Thane. All sorts of outdoor games like cricket, football or hockey will be played on this ground," said Ashok Vaity, Mayor of Thane.
Tendulkar, who has been granted the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Padma Shri and Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India, is the leading run-scorer and century maker in Test and one-day international cricket. He is the only player to score a double century in the history of ODI cricket.
Tendulkar is the first and the only player in Test Cricket history to score fifty centuries, and the first to score fifty centuries in all international cricket combined; he now has 99 centuries in international cricket. (ANI)
